You Write the Copyright LawConsidering all that you know about copyright law, what do you think is fair?In this activity you will be rewriting copyright law. You will have to make decisions about the following:1. How long should someone (and maybe his or her family) own something that they create? What if a company creates something? How long should they retain the rights to it? (Please don’t say forever. It’s just not realistic. Think of the complications around forever when a creator dies. Then what? Does a family inherit the rights? What about 1 or two generations down the road? We could be talking about hundreds of people by then. Who makes the decisions then? Consider Prince. He refused to write a will and now there are 30 family members who claim rights to his estate. It’s very messy and complicated.)2. Should things go into the Public Domain? When?3. What should be allowed and restricted if a person wants to use copyrighted material in a project? classroom? documentary? song? etc. What if it’s a kid making a YouTube video?4. What should the punishments be for anyone who breaks your new law? (Please don’t just tell me a fine for a few hundred dollars. Think about this one. If I were to go make my own movie using a Disney character [they also own Star Wars and Marvel] then I could potentially make hundreds of millions of dollars. What about a fine or a warning would act as a deterrent?)
