Format for Writing a Scientific Paper
Title and Authors:
The author who did the most work or is the most senior is usually listed first.
Abstract:
This is a short statement that allows someone to see if the paper has the information they are looking for.
It should contain
•The objectives of the study
•How the study was done
•What results were obtained
•The significance of the results
Introduction:
The introduction cites other scientific works and papers to let others know why this is interesting what the
objective is.
Materials and Methods:
How the research was done. You will want to be detailed, but assume that the readers have basic scientific
competency. Keep a lab notebook with detailed notes including manufacturer and lot number in order to write
this.This section should not include results. Citations of where one got methods from should be included.
Results:
This section should include the results, including the graphing and statistical analysis. Don’t include the
discussion section (Conclusion)
Conclusion:
Discussion Section – where you summarize what the results mean
Acknowledgements:
Where you thank those who helped you – optional
Literature Cited (Bibliography):This should have the literature cited in alphabetical order here. The citations
should be in the text where applicable. There are many appropriate formats.

Materials and Methods
If you are doing an experiment you need a write up a detailed plan of what you are doing – it
should include a lot of detail. For example, if you are playing on growing something it should
include if it is tap water or bottled water, what the temperature of the water will be, when you are
planning on watering. All materials should be listed with the brand and lot number.
Example: Method For the experiment, 40 ml of distilled water and 40 ml of 5 mm caffeine were
pipetted into two separate petri dishes. Each petri dish was labeled with either distilled water or
caffeine to not cause any confusion. Five blackworms were placed into each petri dish and
separated from each other to the side of the dish using a forceps. When all of the blackworms
were separated, a timer was set with a time limit of 20 minutes for each petri dish to see how
fast the worms would actively seek each other to make a clump in different environments.
Clumping for this experiment was defined as three blackworms touching each other. When
three blackworms touched, the time (minutes) was recorded for that petri dish.
